“Me coming out of this situation doesn’t fall on your shoulders, Silver. You’ve helped me see how I was too lax in my security and how I could be more mindful of my surroundings, but you don’t have to do this anymore.”

In the middle of enjoying our lunch, I confide in Carter my fears of not being able to protect him. I don’t look up from my food and listen as he continues to encourage me to move on, and that makes me wonder what’s causing him to change his mind. “You were pulled into this situation because of a favor, but I fear that very favor may have placed you in harm’s way and that doesn’t sit well with me.”

My head turns to him and I see worry. Not wanting to pull away from this job, favor or not, I reassure him I’m capable. “I can take care of myself.”

“I know you can, but I don’t want this situation to be the reason you’re forced to have to take care of yourself.”

The intense frown that adorns his face pulls at my heartstrings. He’s not kept the fact that he’s concerned about me a secret, but after he voiced his claim on me, hearing him voice those concerns hits a little different than before.

“You’re important to me, Silver, and losing you is not an option, not a risk I’m willing to take.” He takes my right hand again. “I want to force my hand and demand you leave this situation alone, and call the police in the morning, but I don’t see you backing down.”

I react a little differently than I have before with him and lean forward, bring us nose to nose. I shake my head, petting the tip of his nose with mine but also agreeing with his assumption. “You’re right, I won’t back down, especially where you’re concerned.”

“That’s what I thought.” He takes our connection further and the feel of his warm lips lightly passing over mine is so soft I could remain this way with him forever, but he’s not finished talking. “I guess we’ve found ourselves with a bit of a dilemma, so let’s establish a middle ground we can both agree on.”

If we’re about to enter negotiations regarding his safety, I want to be in my clear mind, so I pull away from his lips and sit straight up in my chair.

“I’m all ears,” I say with a raised eyebrow, interested to hear what he proposes.

He licks his lips and his eyes fall on mine, and I do the same with a quick pass of my tongue over them. A few seconds later, our eyes meet once again. “You remain on duty as my guardian angel until we close this deal with Robertson Motors, but before the ink is even dry you back off and allow the authorities to take over.”

“Unless I find the bitch before then,” I add.
